A New Way to Garden

Arivaca garden, April 2019
During the 31 years of living in our NE Seattle house, my husband and I built a garden that I will always treasure, no matter where in the world I live.  However, since moving away from it in the fall of 2017, it has also been a fun learning experience for me to spend the fall through spring months each year nurturing the native Sonoran Desert plants in our new Arivaca garden, as well as a raised bed vegetable garden.

Winter radish treats!

Picking snap peas, radishes, and more in December, and ripe  tomatoes in May is a delicious experience I've never had until now!

I'm also enjoying gardening in the Pacific Northwest in a much different way than ever before:

Snohomish deck garden, August 2019
  • The handful of deck and patio containers at our 2nd floor apartment just outside the town of Snohomish, along with the fountain shown above, bring the birds and bees and butterflies just as close to our windows as our Seattle garden did.  Only now we feel like we're up in the trees along with them!
The "cookie house" gets a makeover
  • Advising our nephew and niece-in-law (is that a real term?)  as they build and tend a large, new raised bed food garden adjacent to their home, has been wonderful to be part of also.  Their energy and strength is quite inspiring, and reminds me of my younger days... nuff said!

  • Helping design a new landscape of tree and shrub beds for them that is deer resistant has been fun for me too.  Plus I still get to have a taste of "nature camp" by helping create child-friendly features for their back yard, and participate in "testing them" with our 3 grand-nephews;

  • Continuing to serve on the Magnuson Children's Garden Committee, and working together to manage this Seattle "gem" has also been great.  We've added new features to the garden again this year, including signage and a self-guided exploration activity in 10 different languages!

I've also got a new email address and website for all my adventures in gardening, art, music, and writing:

I hope you're enjoying the gardens and nature around you today, no matter where in the world you are too!
